No neighbours at all

This is probably one of the most funny street names in Copenhagen. Naboløs means 'no neighbours'. I've always thouhgt that was a quite funny name.

Lagkagehuset

One of the best places to buy cakes is Lagkagehuset (The Layer Cake House). I strongly recommend their strawberry pies. And on a cold morning or afternoon you probably take a coffe as well when you there. But be prepared to queue up for a while, because it is almost always as crowded as this.

Pusher Street

Christiania - or Freetown Christiania - is a self proclaimed autonomous neighboorhood in Copenhagen. It was claimed in 1971 and is one of the biggest tourist attractions in the city. However if you wanna visit it you better get started. These years the government is trying to 'normalise' the area - whatever that means.

Fall in the Botanical Garden

From inside the Botanical Garden this morning. The thing floating on the water is part of an exhibition abouton climate change. It floats freely and goes where the wind and climate takes it. There are eight of them around in the garden and they will be there all winter.

A night of culture

Last night was Kulturnat (Culture Night) in Copenhagen. Heaps of places were open for the public all night. Great atmosphere! This is National Gallery of Denmark.

I have to admit it. Emmery's is my favourite friday morning treat on my way to work.

Counterfeit

The Custom Authorities were having a small 'stop cheating' event today at Rådhuspladsen (Town Hall Square). One of things they focused on was counterfeit products, i.e. fake products like this bag.

The Mountain

This building is called Bjerget (The Mountain). It is a pretty spectacular appartment construction.

Ørestad

At the end of the Metro line in Ørestad. A new suburb of Copenhagen constructed within the last 15 years.

The wing of a wind mill

People gathering to watch the unloading of the wing for a massive wind mill. But they are not building a wind mill in the Botanical Gardens (where the picture is taken). It is just for an exhibition I was told.

Fund raising

The first Sunday in October is always the day when Danish Red Cross have their big day of fund raising. Volunteers knock on peoples doors and ask for a contribution to the NGO. I don't know the exact English word, but the dictionary insists on calling it a 'national subscription'. Let's just call it fund raising. The thing I enjoy the most about it is the chance to look into peoples homes when they open the door.

Not much to say. A bus driving through the city at night. This one is bus No. 43.

This is a very typical sight in Copenhagen. A rainy morning doesn't stop anyone from taking the bike.

2016 Olympics

These days the IOC conference is taking place in Copenhagen. They are about to decide where the 2016 Olympics is going to take place. Everybody is talking about the Chicago delegation - with Oprah Winfrey and Michelle and Barack Obama. But Rio de Janeiro is here as well. And they are staying at this hotel - Skt. Petri Hotel - as the flag shows.

The other delegations are from Madrid and Tokyo. Friday afternoon it will be revealed which city is getting the 2016 Olympics.

Farmers Market II

Yes! This time I was more sucessfull in my search for a good farmers market. I tried a couple of weeks ago, but was rather disappointed. Økologisk Markedslaug (Organic Market Guild) is a cosy little market, with nice organic stuff and the possibility of buying a nice cup of coffee.

Dreaming of London

Today’s post is a tribute to Fresh Eyes on London, which is one of my favourite blogs about my absolute favourite city in the world. Sometimes I even think it is better than Copenhagen… But if you get the chance – visit both places.

For the last week Fresh Eyes on London have been running a small competition, based on a compilation of London photos and three essential questions: Who, what and where? Check out this link to see the photo and read about the competition.

Big Ben is the clock tower at the Palace of Westminster where the Parliament is sitting. That is probably why Winston Churchill is watching. The last time the clock had an unscheduled stop was in the summer of 2005, where it remained still for about 90 minutes due to very hot weather. Maybe we will see more of that with the global warming taking off.

London Eye is the name of the massive wheel sitting on the South Bank - just across the Thames from Big Ben actually. It used to be the Millennium Wheel, as it opened for the new millennium – or at least that was the plan. But due to massive technical difficulties it didn’t open until March 2000. I was living in London back then, and I managed to try it out. It was definitely worth the waiting. Some may say that the name of this blog has been inspired by the wheel. It might be – who knows?

Covent Garden Piazza is a cosy square in London’s West End. Actually it is so cosy that you cannot cross it without encountering heaps of buskers and entertainers. Every time I visit Covent Garden Piazza I make sure that I also make it around the corner to Long Acre – a small quiet alley – and visit the lovely bookshop called Stanfords. It is brimming with maps of places all over the world and travel books about the same places. And I am sure you can bring the coffee that you have bought down at Covent Garden Piazza.

Wouldn't it be great to take a trip to London? And especially with the possibility of travelling futher on smoothly and environmentally friendly to Brussels - another great European city.

The Star Flyer

The Star Flyer in Tivoly has been introduced on this blog before. Even at night people throw themselves into the unknown pleasures of the worlds tallest carousel.

The pros and semi-pros of the Danish cycling elite were having a race around the Parliament today. The later winner is in third position here.

Autumn colours

Went for a walk in Dyrehaven today. It is clear that fall is coming soon. The colours of the leaves are changing.

Morning mist

Today is a beautiful day in Copenhagen. One of those days with a fresh autunm air combined with af last chance 'summery' feeling. Walking through Kongens Have (Kings Garden) this morning was a pleasure.

Skyline

The skyline in Copenhagen is actually not that impressing compared to that of for example New York. But I think it is very unique anyway. This is the view from the Wheel of Copenhagen. It is Tivoli with the roller coaster and Øresundsbroen in the background - the bridge to Sweden.

For three months a big temporary ferris wheel is in Copenhagen for the pleasure of tourist and Copenhageners.

Farmers Market

Today I went to a farmers market at Nørrebro. I had great expectations, and was hoping for something similar to the Veg Out Farmers Market in St Kilda (Melbourne). Check out this photo as well.

But I have to admit that this farmers market wasn't as cosy as the one in St Kilda. I think the photo shows quite well. Actually, there was nothing more than what you can see on the photo. But anyway, I am glad I went and I appreciate those people volunteering.

Stagecoach for rent

Here you can rent a good old stagecoach. Is that the correct English word for a horsedriven taxi? Even though they advertise it, I doubt that they actually have any of those vehicles available.

Small alley

This is Lille Farimagsgade. It is a small (and maybe a little bit secret) dead end alley. It is nice with its cobblestones.

My big blue bag

Someone seems to be carrying their laundry in a big blue bag... as well as an IKEA bag. Funny how you encounter IKEA bags in almost any country in the world - and often used for laundry.

Blind angles

These signs have recently been painted in many large junctions in Copenhagen. Large trucks and vans (as well as everyone else) are reminded to check their blind angles before making a right turn. It says 'Watch out for blind angles'. Suddenly a cyclist may show up.

Outdoor theatre

Someone was performing outdoor theatre today in Kongens Have (Kings Garden). I don't know who they are or what they are performing, but it looks quite nice.

Arcade

There are different kinds of arcades. This is one of the more modern versions compared to this one from out side Marmorkirken (Marble Church).

Metro post

These large posts are towering outside every Metro station in the city - not that there are so many of them. There is only two lines and most of the stops on those two lines are the same. But at least there is a Metro, and it will be expanded over the next couple of decades.
